Production The TOC Way PRODUCTION THE TOC WAY
By: Eliyahu M. Goldratt
Price: Rs. 750.00

The Goal, Eli Goldratt's first book lays the basis for the THEORY OF CONSTRAINTS.

The Goal was a runaway best-seller with many managers totally identifying themselves with Alex Rogo, the hero in the story. Many tried to implement the revolutionary management principle, The Theory of Constraints, unsuccessfully, with a few exceptions.

While most readers could perceive and agree with the "common sense" of The Goal, they nevertheless had difficulty implementing the Theory of Constraints, for they could not identify the real constraint - they continued to try to improve everything they knew how to improve, they continued to justify investments based on cost calculations, they continued to make decisions based on product-cost impact. However, they continued to ignore the fundamental difference between a transfer batch and a process batch, they even continued to measure efficiencies and variances. And this was done even in companies where the President made The Goal mandatory reading!

Why?
The obstacles, identified, being:
  • Lack of ability to propagate the message throughout the company
  • Lack of ability to translate the learning from the book into workable practices
  • Lack of ability to persuade the decision makers to allow the change of some of the measurements.

Goldratt's answers for overcoming these obstacles were in the form of a precise verbalization of the need to change the measurements and the rules of logistical procedure; Drum-Buffer-Rope and the Buffer Management principles. Once again, many managers did not get the expected benefits. So Dr. Goldratt developed a computer game. A game is probably easier to understand than a story. It is in the form of a computer simulation - where a factory situation is simulated. He called the book Production the TOC Way.

We present the Production the TOC Way along with a work book and the computer simulation. This book is a must for all those anxious and eager to implement The Goal.

If you have not read THE GOAL and the GOAL II, this book will introduce you to Dr. Goldratt's Thinking Processes, and you will understand why Fortune Magazine calls him "a guru to industry," and Business Week describes him as a "genius."

"The difference between Goldratt and the new age business authors, I guess, comes down to one fundamental element. Goldratt is simply amazing and the others are amazingly simplistic." - Assembly.

"..A small but growing number of managers at some of the world's biggest manufacturers are agreeing with him." - Business Week.

DEMING GOLDRATT DEMING GOLDRATT
The Theory of Constraints and The System of Profound Knowledge

By: Domenico Lepore and Oded Cohen
Price 295.00

This book presents a step-by-step guide to implementing the management systems of Dr. W. Edwards Deming and Dr. Eliyahu M. Goldratt in the form of an integrated ten-step process called: THE DECALOGUE

The ten steps of the Decalogue stem from one fundamental concept: in order to manage effectively we must be able topredict the outcome of our decisions. Prediction is possible only within a system in a state of statistical control. Achieving such a state enhances our possibilities of getting the maximum performance from our system.

Indeed, the performance of any stable system is limited by a very small number of factors---in most cases only one. We call these limiting factors 'constraints'. Managing a stable system effectively is possible through the effective management of its constraints. Moreover, constraints are not only internal to the system; very often what constrains our performance is our inability to sell what we are able to produce or provide.

Continual improvement of an organization's performance can only be sustained over time by on-going company-wide learning. This learning must result in a consistent and synchronized set of actions. The Decalogue provides a systematic guide for implementing and sustaining such a robust process of continual improvement.

DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF FISHERIES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT OF FISHERIES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES
By : K. Sivasubramaniam
Price: $25

Fisheries development has reached a critical stage worldwide, for it is no longer possible to maintain the rate of increase in annual production. Many of the stocks have reached or even exceeded their limits of sustainable level, particularly in the developing countries which have allowed their fisheries to develop along paths of least resistance, countries.

The developed countries are striving hard to sustain their fisheries by improving management systems. The developing countries are still implement sufficient management mechanisms to regulate their fisheries which have been growing too long, without sufficient long-term planning and management action. It is high time that developing countries put in much more serious effort to take care of their fisheries, for fish is one of the main and cheap sources of proteinaceous food items for the large and growing populations of poor people of these countries. This requires multi-pronged action, involving various sources at various levels such as fisheries education, fisheries research, fisheries administration, political will and, last but not the least, the participation of the fishing communities. Unfortunately, activities in these areas are not taking place at an even pace in all developing countries. In fact, certain aspects of fisheries have a negative growth in some of these countries.

With 40 years of experience in the developing region, the author, Dr. K Sivasubramaniam, has the experience and knowledge to benefit those interested and involved with fisheries in developing countries. To them he offers in these pages a wealth of information on fisheries development in developing countries, stock and economic assessment, and fisheries management, with particular emphasis on the bio-socioeconomic approach.

The One Minute Manager- Gung Ho! The One Minute Manager- Gung Ho!
By : Kenneth Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles
Price: Rs. 125

An invaluable new strategy for creating enthusiastic employees, from the author of the bestselling The One Minute Manager.

Every day thousands of uninspired employees trudge to work – often dooming their companies to failure with their lack of enthusiasm. Drawing on over 20 years’ experience of working with hundreds of corporations across the US – including America Online, Eastman Kodak, General Motors, Hershey Chocolate and Microsoft – Blanchard reveals a surefire strategy for boosting employee enthusiasm, productivity and performance. Gung Ho! presents a simple system for inspiring employees. Based on three core ideas: work must be seen as important, workers must be put in control of their own production and managers must cheer their workers on – it is a method that all employees and managers can easily implement and which has already been adopted by such major corporations as K-Mart.

From Library Journal
In these days where the computer reigns supreme and management thought is presented in complicated models, there is something refreshing about management principles taught by allegory. Blanchard (The One Minute Manager, LJ 3/1/84), along with coauthor Bowles (Raving Fans, Morrow, 1993) recounts an organizational turnaround based on three Native American lessons. In “The Spirit of the Squirrel,” the lesson is one of the power of worthwhile work. In “The Way of the Beaver,” the lesson is accomplished through empowerment. In “The Gift of the Goose,” the lesson is the exponential factor of motivation. The problem inherent in the principles in this work, or any change program from weight-loss diets on up, is that there needs to be constant focus; success, if it is not continually renewed, is dissipated over time. Although new, this work makes a good preface and companion to Eliyahu Goldratt and Jeff Cox’s The Goal (Productivity & Quality Publishing Pvt Ltd, 2004. 3rd ed.) Pennsylvania Transit
Authority, Philadelphia
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Ken Blanchard and Sheldon Bowles, co-authors of the New York Times business bestseller Raving Fans, are back with Gung Ho! Here is an invaluable management tool that outlines foolproof ways to increase productivity by fostering excellent morale in the workplace. It is a must-read for everyone who wants to stay on top in today’s ultra-competitive business world.

Raving Fans taught managers how to turn customers into full-fledged fans. Now, Gung Ho! brings the same magic to employees. Through the inspirational story of business leaders Peggy Sinclair and Andy Longclaw, Blanchard and Bowles reveal the secret of Gung Ho–a revolutionary technique to boost enthusiasm and performance and usher in astonishing results for any organization. The three principles of Gung Ho are:
• The Spirit of the Squirrel
• The Way of the Beaver
• The Gift of the Goose

These three cornerstones of Gung Ho are surprisingly simple and yet amazingly powerful. Whether your organization consists of one or is listed in the Fortune 500, this book ensures Gung Ho employees committed to success

Gung Ho! also includes a clear game plan with a step-by-step outline for instituting these groundbreaking ideas. Destined to become a classic, Gung Ho! is a rare and wonderful business book that is packed with invaluable information as well as a compelling, page-turning story. Management legend Ken Blanchard and master entrepreneur Sheldon Bowles are back with Gung Ho!, revealing a surefire way to boost employee enthusiasm, productivity, and performance and usher in astonishing results for any organization.

Raving Fans brilliantly schooled managers on how to turn customers into raving fans. Gung Ho! now brings the same magic to employees. Here is the story of how two managers saved a failing company and turned in record profits with record productivity. The three core ideas of Gung Ho! are surprisingly simple: worthwhile work guided by goals and values; putting workers in control of their production; and cheering one another on. Their principles are so powerful that business leaders, reviewing the manuscript for Ken and Sheldon, have written to say, “Sorry. Ignored instructions. Have photocopied for everyone. I promise to buy books, but can’t wait. We need now!” Like Raving Fans, Gung Ho! delivers.

The Choice The ChoiceBy : Eliyahu M. Goldratt
Price: Rs. 295

TOC has been successfully applied in almost every area of human endeavor, from industry to healthcare to education. And while Eli Goldratt is indeed a scientist, an educator and a business leader, he is first and foremeost a philosopher, some say a genius. He is a thinker who provokes others to do the same. Often characterized as unconventional, and always stimulating – a slayer of sacred cows – Dr. Goldratt exhorts his readers to examine and reassess their lives and business practices by cultivating a different perspective and a clear new vision

In his latest book, The Choice, Goldratt once again presents his thought provoking approach, this time through a conversion with his daughter Efrat, as he explains to her his fundamental system of beliefs.

Readers Comments:

"The author does a great job of presenting information to help us start thinking without telling us the answers, since it is evident that we each must find our own answers to a fulfilling life."

"I love that the book asks the question, "Why do people not fix things that they know are wrong?"

"The ideas of inherent simplicity and that for situations that involve human interactions we already have the knowledge required are very powerful."

"Excellent reading, the book contained sound principles of running effective business brought to life in a personal and inspirational manner."

"I enjoyed the unique approach to business as an understanding in human behavior. Well written and understandable."

"I found the book to be provocative, which is typical of a Goldratt book. It forced me to think and question my previously held assumptions. Its conclusions come out to be very optimistic, not to make the reader be a good person, but it helps to make one achieve clear thinking. This is a book you would want to re-read and practice the techniques outlined there."

The Gold Mine The Gold Mine: A novel of lean turnaround
By : By Freddy Ballé & Michael Ballé
Price: Rs. 450

A growing number of successful companies are turning to lean thinking to maintain a competitive edge in a global economy of falling prices, rising quality, and relentless competition. Yet while there are many excellent resources that teach both the tools and principles, no single book addresses what might be the most important lean discipline of all—the human challenge of creating and sustaining the commitment of the people doing the work.

The Gold Mine deftly weaves together the technical and human pieces of implementing lean manufacturing in an engaging story that readers will find both compelling and instructive. Authors Freddy and Michael Ballé have produced the first integrated and systematic approach to a set of ideas that have maximized value and minimized waste throughout the world.

At the heart of The Gold Mine is Bob Woods, a curmudgeonly sensei coaxed out of retirement by his son Mike to help boyhood friend Phil Jenkinson save his struggling company. Despite terrific products and a backlog of orders, Phil's company cannot generate enough cash from its operations to pay its bills. And so Mike enlists Bob to help his pal fix this crisis.

“You're trying to deal with your mess as if it was a technical problem,” Bob tells Phil. “Move this machine here, change this design there, which it is to some extent, but … it's all about people. You have a leadership problem not just a production or business problem.” As Phil begins to tackle the key challenges necessary to improve his company's operations, he comes to understand the deeper points of lean. Readers will also draw powerful insights from his journey.

The Gold Mine presents all the key lean principles, ranging from well-known ideas such as pull and flow, to lesser-known yet equally important principles such as jidoka and heijunka. The book also reveals lean as a system—using a realistic story to show how the principles are interrelated and how they lead to useful tools such as kanban or 5S. Freddy Ballé draws from his authority of one of Europe's preeminent lean veterans, bringing his knowledge to life in the context of a dramatic human story of managers and employees struggling to apply these tools and ideas in a successful turnaround.

“Mastery of the technical details of lean thinking is never enough. A transformation will fail without the most important element: the engagement of the people doing the work,” says publisher James Womack. “The Gold Mine is the first book to comprehensively introduce all the lean tools by means of a vivid personal story showing how hearts and minds are won over. It will spark ah-ha's from everyone who has been there and provide profound insight for those who are just getting started. I can't recommend it highly enough as a way to teach your people the key lean tools that always lead to success while also teaching, in the words of Bob Woods, that 'it's all about people.

”Reading The Gold Mine is like eavesdropping on a sensei dispensing gems to a client,” says co-publisher Daniel Jones. “The Ballés draw from a remarkable perspective of wisdom and experience. Readers, especially those individuals working on the shop floor, will gain revelation and inspiration by living through the experiences of the hero. This is an experiential novel that will resonate deeply with people who relate it to their own lives. Managers and executives just beginning a lean transformation will learn valuable insights about how to sidestep the technical and people problems that lay ahead. And experienced lean thinkers will discover fresh insights about overcoming resistance to change.

”While The Gold Mine represents LEI's first book of fiction, Womack envisions it as a natural complement to the workbooks that have established themselves as the leading guides for learning lean. “The Gold Mine was created on the premise that people have different learning styles, and that a set of ideas based on the shop floor—where the action takes place—can be grasped intuitively by illustrating how one particular company responds,” he says. “It complements our established products by presenting a different but equally vital method of sharing knowledge.

”For more than 30 years, Freddy Ballé worked as a manufacturing and engineering manager or executive at Renault and auto suppliers in Europe. He started visiting Toyota plants in Japan in the mid-1970s to study the Toyota Production System. In recent years Freddy founded ESG Consultants to help industrial clients make the lean transformation described in The Gold Mine.

Michael Ballé, business consultant and author, is associate professor (adjunct) at the American University of Paris and the co-founder of the Project Lean Entreprise in France. He is Freddy's son.

LEARNING TO SEE LEARNING TO SEE
By : Mike Rother and John Shook Ward
Price: Rs. 1500

Value-stream maps are the blueprints for lean transformations and Learning to See is an easy-to-read, step-by-step instruction manual that teaches this valuable tool to anyone, regardless of his or her background.

This groundbreaking workbook, which has introduced the value-stream mapping tool to thousands of people around the world, breaks down the important concepts of value-stream mapping into an easily grasped format. The workbook, a Shingo Research Prize recipient in 1999, is filled with actual maps, as well as engaging diagrams and illustrations.

The value-stream map is a paper-and-pencil representation of every process in the material and information flow, along with key data. It differs significantly from tools such as process mapping or layout diagrams because it includes information flow as well as material flow. Value-stream mapping is an overarching tool that gives managers and executives a picture of the entire production process, both value and non value-creating activities. Rather than taking a haphazard approach to lean implementation, value-stream mapping establishes a direction for the company.
To encourage you to become actively involved in the learning process, Learning to See contains a case study based on a fictional company, Acme Stamping. You begin by mapping the current state of the value stream, looking for all the sources of waste. After identifying the waste, you draw a map of a leaner future state and a value-stream plan to guide implementation and review progress regularly.
Written by two experts with practical experience, Mike Rother and John Shook, the workbook makes complicated concepts simple. It teaches you the reasons for introducing a mapping program and how it fits into a lean conversion.

With this easy- to-use product, a company gets the tool it needs to understand and use value-stream mapping so it can eliminate waste in production processes. Start your lean transformation or acceleraate your existing effort with value-stream mapping.

LEAN PRODUCT AND PROCESS DEVELOPMENT LEAN PRODUCT AND PROCESS DEVELOPMENT: A novel of lean turnaround
By : Allen C. Ward
Price: Rs.1000.00

As LEI’s understanding of lean and its application to the entire enterprise has deepened, we have begun to provide resources to help organizations to perform core business tasks in new, more effective ways. One of the most critical of these tasks is new product development. LEI is honored to be able to publish this book, Lean Product and Process Development, by the late Allen Ward, one of the pioneers in the study and practice of lean product development.

In this breakthrough text, Ward:

Asks basic questions that drive at the fundamentals of product development. Observes the sources (a.k.a. “wastes”) of the most common maladies that plague many product development organizations.
Distills what might be termed “cornerstones” from the practices of lean product developers, most notably Toyota and its partners, which differ remarkably from conventional practice.
Uniquely melds observations of effective teamwork from his military background, engineering fundamentals from his education and personal experience, design methodology from his research, and theories about management, cognition, and learning from his understanding of history and interactions with clients.

Carries the implications of his theories into specific, practical recommendations. Employs systems thinking in all aspects of thought and investigation.

Management By Quality Management By Quality
Second Revised Edition
By : DR. HITOSHI KUME
Price: Rs.600.00

The expression ‘offer products that satisfy customer requirements’ is not just about ethics, but is the key to survival for organizations today. Globalization and technological improvements have made it easy for customers to get what they want, how much they want, whenever they want and of the quality they seek. Therefore, quality management has become integral to achieve stable growth.

However, despite the availability of a wide range of management tools such as TPM, JIT, Lean Production and 6-Sigma, implementation of quality management is not easy.
Therefore, it is time to rewrite Management by Quality, to provide a systematic explanation of current TQM theory and practice. Although TQM itself has not changed greatly during the last decade, this edition aims to be a guide to directors and managers of companies outside Japan, to find out what it is all about. While TQM stresses more on practice than on theory, it is essential to understand it well in order to obtain reliable results. This book is expected to fulfil that purpose.

In this book ‘Management by Quality’, Dr. Kume begins by discussing the basics of quality, management and improvement, explains the concepts of TQM, and presents the elements of a TQM program. He describes how to actually introduce and develop TQM in a business, and the differences between quality management based on the ISO 9000 standards and TQM.

This book was originally written in Japanese and was translated into English by Professor Motwani. The aim of the author is to further the understanding of TQM, and spread it across the globe. This he does through case studies, tables and charts.

Dr Hitoshi Kume
Dr. Hitoshi Kume has trained under the guidance of Dr. Kaoru Ishikawa. He succeeded Dr. Ishikawa at the University of Tokyo as a full-fledged Professor from 1980 to 1997. He has been engaged in quality improvement for over 40 years.

Dr. Kume has written several articles and books in Japanese and English. His book Statistical Methods for Quality Control has received worldwide acclaim. His book Management by Quality was published by Productivity Press in India Earlier.

THE NATURAL WAY OF FARMING THE NATURAL WAY OF FARMING
The Theory and Practice of Green Philosophy
By: MASANOBU FUKUOKA
Price: 500.00

Japan’s most amazing natural farmer, the author of the classic One Straw Revolution returns with an in –depth look at his unique method of “do-nothing’ farming.

Masanobu Fukuoka is a rare individual to have devoted over fifty years to farming as a spiritual path. Even rarer in this age of fragmented specialization is his grasp on the interrelatedness of all aspects of human society and nature. Acclaimed as a “modern-day Lao Tzu” by fellow Japanese for his paradoxical wisdom, he reaches back to the source of agrarian traditions to emerge at the vanguard of post-industrial civilization. He stands on the direct realization that culture is agriculture, and overturns preconceptions and rational reductions of the world to show us the roots of a healthy and whole way of life – and the proof is in his farming!

Imagine raising crops with no cultivation, no chemical fertilizers or herbicides, not even any added compost! Fukuoka has learned not to ask the impossible of nature, and is blessed with impossibly high yields. Instead of continually attempting to do a little bit more, he has looked for ways to do less, to leave off unnecessary labors, and yet his soil grows richer every year. He has pared his costs, equipment, and techniques down to an absolute minimum, rejecting the race to keep up with run away relative economics for a saner, more balanced natural cycle. He offers us a provocative image of stewardship to the earth as the cornerstone to a society of sufficiency, permanence, and self-renewal.

Here is one volume are the secrets of Fukuoka’s approach to farming the natural way; the theory and practice of working with nature, and living better for it. At once philosophical and down-to-earth, he takes us on a walk through health fields, and clearly explains how we can and must change our way of doing things if we are to make lasting peace with the earth and ourselves.

Photographs, diagrams, and tables provide abundant practical reference for gardeners and farmers, while the lucid text will open the eyes of the most general reader. Detailed coverage of actual methods instructs competently without becoming overly technical. This is a highly accessible book with far-reaching implications and applications for all.

About the author
Born in a small farming village on the island of Shikoku in southern Japan in 1914, Masanobu Fukuoka was trained in microbiology as a plant pathologist. His command of this newly introduced Western science soon won him what promised to be a steady, if uneventful career as an agricultural customs inspector running tests on incoming and outgoing plants at the port of Yokohama. Then suddenly, at only twenty-five, doubts set in. He started to question everything he had learned about the “wonders of modern agricultural science,” and in a dawning of vision he came to see that all the “accomplishments” of human civilization are meaningless before the totality of nature. From that moment on, his life has been dedicated to fulfilling the promise of that vision; bringing it into ever greater, more immediate focus. Since the publication of his best-selling introductory work, One-Straw Revolution, he has accepted invitations to visit the United States in 1978, Europe in 1981, and Africa in 1985, where he lectured and made a tour of organic farms, but he prefers to stay close by his fields. He still writes, and openly shares of his philosophy and farming methods with all who come to him eager to learn.

COURAGE MY COMPANION COURAGE MY COMPANION
A candid autobiography
By: R V Rajan
Price: 295.00

This is the true story of an event-filled life that rivals fiction. R.V. Rajan was born in a small village in Tamil Nadu and spent 26 years in a chawl in Matunga, Central Bombay. But he not merely made an enduring impact in the glitzy world of advertising; he helped build institutions serving the cause of advertising education, media research, newspaper publishing and rural marketing.

Rajan grew professionally through industry, energy and sheer audacity in venturing and adventuring into new territories and frontiers.

After an event-packed career start in Bombay (Clarion McCann) and later with the multinational Grant Kenyon & Eckhart. Rajan became the CEO of a national ad agency, Advertising Consults India Ltd or ACIL, a sister company of Clarion at 31.

Moving to Chennai in 1974 to rejoin Grant Kenyon Eckhart, Rajan founded his own agency, Anugrah Marketing in 1986 which later became Anugrah Madison, the rural division of Madison Group. Over the years he gradually developed a reputation for rural communication, on the basis of his contributions to several agriculture-based clients such as Shaw Wallace, EID Parry, BASF and the MRF Farm Tyre Division. He was founder-president for four years of the Rural Marketing Association of India, set up in 2005.

His flair for institution-building, problem-shooting and documentation was tapped by voluntary organizations such as Round Table India and Rotary International as well as by professional bodies such as the Singapore-based AMIC (Asian Media Information & Communication Centre), RMAI (Rural Marketing Association of India) and Ad Club, Madras.

Convert every challenge into an opportunity, is Rajan’s driving principle. It has led to success on many fronts and generous recognition: the Round Table India’s Distinguished Service Award (1984); the Outstanding Service Award from WAN-IFRA, a newspaper publishing industry body (2009) and a Lifetime Achievement Award from RMAI (2009).

His experience and ideas now translate into lectures at management institutes & speeches at workshops and seminars.

His autobiography is a candid fact-packed fast-moving description of his personal, professional and extra-curricular life. It makes for compelling and rewarding reading.

What they say….

There are very few books written by people in advertising-more so by practioners after they have moved away from the business. Perhaps the eloquence during their working days suddenly deserts them. (This writer is no exception. In my case my plea is: one must have something worthwhile to say.)

R V Rajan is an exception. He has much to tell-his colourful experiences – growing up in the chawls of Bombay, presiding over some of the most prized businesses of the first advertising agency he worked for in Bombay. And finally establishing his own agency which has many an achievement to its credit.

Along the way Rajan involved himself in several projects: some related to the profession and some of a socially relevant nature, thus re-emphasising the saying “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
-S R Ayer, Former MD, Ogilvy & Mather

Autobiographies need not be written only by very famous people. There is a lot for us to learn from not so well-known people who are achievers nevertheless and whose life can provide inspiration to a lot of people. When reading the manuscript of Rajan’s book, for some reason I though I was going through a R.K. Narayan novel. Rajan’s story is absorbing and fascinating because of its simple, one-to-one narrative style.
-Sam Balsara, Chairman & Managing Director, Madison World

I must compliment Rajan on his memory and his writing skills which have made the book very readable, often amusing and always interesting. The account of his early years is a remarkable story of resilience and resolution. It is a commendable effort. Clearly a labour of love and a tale of perseverance.
-Vijay Menon, Former Secretary General, AMIC, Singapore

I must appreciate and congratulate Rajan for having written a candid memoir. His experiences and journey through his professional and private lives contain many lessons for youngsters starting out in life.
-R Jagadish Chandran, Past President, World Council for Young Men’s Services Club (WOCO)

Creating Continuous Flow Creating Continuous Flow
By: Mike Rother and Rick Harris
Price 1500.00

Mike Rother and Rick Harris

This workbook explains in simple, step-by-step terms how to introduce and sustain lean flows of material and information in pacemaker cells and lines, a prerequisite for achieving a lean value stream.

A sight we frequently encounter when touring plants is the relocation of processing steps from departments (process villages) to product-family work cells, but too often these "cells" produce only intermittent and erratic flow. Output gyrates from hour to hour and small piles of inventory accumulate between each operation so that few of the benefits of cellularization are actually being realized; and, if the cell is located upstream from the pacemaker process, none of the benefits may ever reach the customer.

Creating Continuous Flow takes you to the next level in work cell design where you'll achieve even greater cost and lead time savings. You'll learn:
  • where to focus your continuous flow efforts
  • how to create much more efficient work cells and lines
  • how to operate a pacemaker process so that a lean value stream is possible
  • how to sustain the gains, and keep improving

Creating Continuous Flow is the next logical step after Learning to See. The value-stream mapping process defined the pacemaker process and the overall flow of products and information in the plant. The next step is to shift your focus from the plant to the process level by zeroing in on the pacemaker process, which sets the production rhythm for the plant or value stream, and apply the principles of continuous flow.

Every production facility has at least one pacemaker process. The pacemaker processes is usually where products take their final form before going to external customers. It’s called the pacemaker because how you operate here determines both how well you can serve the customer and what the demand pattern is like for your upstream supplying processes.

How the pacemaker process operates is critically important. A steady and consistently flowing pacemaker places steady and consistent demands on the rest of the value stream. The continuous flow processing that results allows companies to create leaner value streams.
